Vevay-Switzerland County (IN) Bicentennial welcomes State Bicentennial commission

VEVAY, IN (FOX19)  - The Vevay-Switzerland County Indiana Bicentennial committee attended a meeting with Chris Jensen, Executive Director of the 2016 Indiana Bicentennial Commission and Jim Corridan, State Archivist. The group met at the Switzerland County Visitors Center in Vevay on May 8, 2013.

The Vevay-Switzerland County committee shared information on the events leading up to and throughout the October 4-13, 2013 county Bicentennial. Jensen and Corridan informed members about opportunities and plans for the 2016 Indiana Bicentennial. Officials from the state hope that all Indiana counties will take on a local project in celebration of the 2016 statewide event. They will also help promote the Vevay-Switzerland Bicentennial at the state level.

SWITZERLAND COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - Locals and businesses located in Vevay and throughout Switzerland County, Indiana are gearing up for a spring yard sale. The event will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2013 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Some residents will also participate on Sunday, June 16.  The event is open to the public.

VEVAY, IN (FOX19) - The Vevay-Switzerland County Bicentennial committee has launched a new website. Available through www.vevaybicentennial.org, the site consists of events and pertinent information surrounding the activities leading up to and including the official October 4-23, 2013 celebration. “Pride in our past, promise in our future” is the Bicentennial theme.

Information regarding Switzerland County-Vevay’s history, Bicentennial events and locations/directions are available on the website. A photo section with vintage county postcards and images from recent events is included.  Volunteer and donation opportunities are also listed.  

Updates on the site will be ongoing as more activities and events are disclosed. When available, Bicentennial souvenirs will be shown.

SWITZERLAND COUNTY, IN (FOX19)  - Tom and Mary Jane Demaree of The Ridge Winery will present a free wine tasting of the Vevay-Switzerland County Bicentennial wine at the Switzerland County Visitors Center during the May First Friday. The event will take place on May 3 from 6-9pm.

The Demarees’ have produced a sweet red grape blend table wine in celebration of the Vevay-Switzerland County Bicentennial. The wine is presented in a cobalt blue bottle and features a label designed by artist Donna Weaver. 

A Switzerland County Indiana Artisan, Donna Weaver is also a sculptor-engraver who worked for the U.S. Mint. She designed and sculpted many state quarters, commemorative coins and gold medals. Having retired in 2006 she continues to participate in the Mint’s Artistic Infusion program and designs for specific coinage projects.

VEVEAY, IN (FOX19) - The Ridge Winery Tasting Room in Vevay, IN, will participate in the Indiana Wine Trail’s Spring into the Valley. The event will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21 from 11am-5pm at six wineries along the trail. Each location will pair their specialty wines with a variety of breads and cheeses.

Located at 298 Hwy 156 in Vevay, IN, The Ridge Winery sits alongside the scenic Ohio River between Belterra and downtown Vevay , IN.  Sit and sip inside their enclosed patio room or outdoors on their deck while watching the river traffic go by. During the Spring into the Valley event, The Ridge Winery will feature Hawaiian, Mexican, and spinach cheese dips served with delicious bread.

East Central student wins $3000 in entrepreneurial competition

DEARBORN COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - A East Central High School senior student is the first ever Dearborn County winner of the Maverick Challenge.

A.J. Waltz won the business planning competition for students locally sponsored by AIM Young Professionals of Greater Dearborn County.

AIM YP introduced the Maverick Challenge to Dearborn County in the Fall of 2012. When Waltz, an 18-year-old with a keen eye who owns his own fledgling photography business, heard about the opportunity from East Central business teacher Kelly Pettit, he jumped at it.

"I wanted to learn more about how to conduct my business," Waltz said. "I wanted to identify the weaknesses of my business and how to improve them."

RIPLEY COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - Due to changes in the town’s waste disposal services, the electronics drop off container formerly housed at the waste water treatment plant in Versailles is no longer available.

Ripley County residents are welcome to utilize the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District’s (SEIRD) electronic disposal services at the Ripley County Recycling & Reuse Center in Osgood. The facility is located adjacent to the Ripley County Highway Garage at 2710 North Hasmer Hill Rd. The recycling center’s business hours are Mon.-Fri. from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 a.m. and Sat. from 8 a.m. to noon.

Residents can dispose of computers and monitors, printers, scanners, stereos, DVD players, cell phones, VCRs, televisions sets and more at no charge. Limits of two units are set for computers, monitors, and televisions.
