SWITZERLAND COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - Teacher Ryan Jesop’s eighth grade students received a hands-on lesson in public relations and marketing by competing in the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District’s Write a Recycling Ad Contest. Jesop is the business and information technology teacher at Switzerland County Middle School in Vevay.

Last school year, SEIRD—known at the time as Southeastern Indiana Solid Waste District (SISWD) —sponsored a “Create a Recycling Ad Contest” across the district. Over 350 pieces of artwork were submitted to the organization in hopes of being used in SISWD print ads across Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, Scott, and Switzerland Counties.

“It was a big hit, although we would have liked to have had a better response from the middle and upper grades,” Miller said. Ten winning ads appeared in district newspapers over Earth Day.

The Southeastern Indiana Recycling District (SEIRD) announces that the first of two recycling rebate checks were distributed to district schools at the end of December.

Through a program announced last August, SEIRD reported that they would issue recycling rebates to participating schools that had their recyclables picked up by the organization. The company services seven counties including: Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, Scott, and Switzerland.

SEIRD’s processing team tracked all recycled materials collected at each individual school, and granted the market value of these products back to each institute. In over three months, 46 participating schools collected over

185,000 pounds of paper, cardboard, plastic, and steel cans—all of which will be recycled into post-consumer products.  The schools received checks with the combined total of around $6000.
