IN Gov. Pence gets flu shot, requests progress reports

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Mike Pence is showing that it's not too late to get a flu shot.

The governor says he was so busy late last year that he simply forgot. But he got the shot at his office Thursday from Marion County's public health director, Virginia Caine. Health officials are continuing to encourage vaccination to prevent the spread of flu.

In Indianapolis, health officials are asking Marion County schools for daily absentee rates in order to monitor the spread of flu in classrooms.

Caine says if the rates of absent students are high enough, schools might need to close.

Officials say the vaccine is still available across Indiana. The vaccine becomes effective two weeks after a person receives the shot. The flu season usually lasts from October to May.
