Dillsboro man dies in Route 1 motorcycle crash

GUILFORD, IN (FOX19) - A Dillsboro man was killed Sunday afternoon in a motorcycle crash on State Route 1 just south of Cook Road, north of Guilford.

At around 12:50 p.m. Dearborn County Dispatch received a 911 call about the crash.  According to Indiana State Police Master Trooper Ben Bastin, a 1992 Harley-Davidson Sportster being operated by 48 year old David E. Dreihaus of Dillsboro was northbound on S.R. 1 when he crashed into the guard rail on the northbound side of S.R. 1.

A witness, who was following Dreihaus, told Trooper Bastin there may have been some kind of problem with the bike because Dreihaus reached down as if he we was trying to make an adjustment when the bike began to wobble then left the roadway and struck the guardrail.

Dreihaus was pronounced dead at the scene by representatives from the Dearborn County Coroner’s office of massive head injuries and a possible broken neck.

The ISP say that though Dreihaus was not wearing a helmet, it is believed the force of the impact was so great; a helmet probably would not have made a difference.

Trooper Bastin also commented the bike appeared to be in proper operating order with no obvious mechanical issues.  S.R. 1 was closed for 45 minutes to an hour while the on-scene investigation was being conducted.

The crash remains under investigation.  Trooper Bastin was assisted at the scene by Dearborn County Sheriff’s Deputies, Miller-York Volunteer Fire Department, Greendale EMS, and the Dearborn County Coroner’s Office.
